John Holland in our Glasgow office has recently been involved in helping children in the Primary 7 class at the Park School, Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire with the IMechE sponsored - Primary Engineer program.
Primary Engineer is designed to foster an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) amongst primary school children so that in the future they might pursue a career in engineering.
The Park School is for children with additional educational support needs and the school felt that it would be very beneficial for them to participate in the program, so when Hawkins offered to sponsor a class prize, they were very appreciative.
This year’s program included a competition to build a model car with working axles. The design brief was that the cars should be able to roll freely down a slope and maintain a straight path for as long as possible. The children, who worked in teams of two, were responsible for the design and construction of the cars. They also produced design documentation and decorated the cars in a style of their choice.
All the children worked very hard on this project and all of the cars that they built performed very well in testing. Therefore, they decided that everyone who took part should benefit from a prize. A class trip was organised to the Glasgow Science Centre and IMAX Cinema, which proved a big hit.
The school will be using the sponsorship money that was left over to buy technology equipment for use by the children in the future.
