WINTER DRIVING
Published: 3rd February 2012
Mike Hopwood, a Highways Engineer based in our Wilmslow office, has the following advice when driving in icy, wintery conditions:

Not all roads are gritted and in fact most are not.- Try to stick to 'A' roads as much as possible as these are likely to have been gritted.
- It is myth that roads outside schools are gritted. Quite simply, some are and some are not.
- If temperatures drop below -5ºC grit can be less effective, so take extra care even if you are on a road you believe to have been gritted.
- Early morning is when hoar frosts can strike, which can make even a gritted road slippery. Danger spots for hoar frosts are exposed locations, bridge decks, isolated hollows and near a water course.
