Jon's introduction to a career in engineering was when he joined the Quality Assurance Directorate of the Ministry of Defence in 1986 as an Apprentice. After four years of developing hands-on manufacturing skills and completing an ONC and HNC in Mechanical Engineering, Jon decided to study Engineering at degree level and was offered a place at Brighton Polytechnic (which shortly afterwards became the University of Brighton).

Following completion of an Honours Degree and Masters, Jon returned to the Defence Research Agency and later the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, before leaving the Civil Service to enter the private defence industry.  Jon then specialised in reliability and maintainability engineering for several years, working on international fighting vehicle projects.

After a short period managing automotive engine production line installations, Jon joined Lotus Engineering in 2000 as a Project Engineer. This phase of Jon’s career saw him working on the design and development of the Vauxhall VX220/Opel Speedster sports car, the Lotus Exige and Europa, before moving into Project Management. Jon was then responsible for delivering vehicle design and development programmes for automotive manufacturers including prestige European and Japanese brands, niche sportscar manufacturers, rapidly developing Indian and Chinese manufacturers, and the innovative electric car manufacturer, Tesla Motors.

Jon joined Hawkins in 2008. Since joining he has carried out numerous investigations into road traffic accidents, escapes of water and mechanical engineering failures that have varied greatly in nature and scale from relatively small domestic incidents to large losses.

Jon is currently an Associate based in our Cambridge office.
