Review of Professional Engineering Magazine
Published: 29 July 2008
What a great read! I was so engrossed that I almost missed lunch.
The magazine concentrates on engineering news. Rather than a detailed and learned expose of a small number of items it covers such topics as:
- Superjumbo schedule slips again
- Johnson (Boris) gives go ahead for Thames desalination plant
- Heathrow crash enquiry focuses on fuel system
- Production of MG sports car restarts in August
There are more detailed articles, such as a balanced view on the long running Severn Barrage debate. Apparently, this would provide 5% of our entire energy requirements. Whilst there are environmental downsides with regards to loss of habitat for wading birds, there are some upsides too with regards to marine life growth which cannot cope with the current tidal range of 14 metres.
Engineers at Lotus sports cars are experimenting by powering a Lotus Exige on Methanol which they think will be the fuel of the future, if they can overcome the problems. Staying with the car theme, Hyundai are working on a luxury coupe aimed at rivalling BMW and Audi and taking their cheap and cheerful brand upmarket. It will be a great trick if they can pull it off, but if your reviewer had £40,000 to spend on a luxury car it would not currently be spent on a Hyundai.
Finally, I have to mention the article on counterfeit bearings. Fakes are being produced in very high numbers and the World Bearing Association (no, me neither) have been working hard to do something about it. The problem is not just loss of revenue for the major, reputable manufacturers. Bearings are used in almost every piece or rotating plant: vehicles, aircraft, machine tools and wind turbines and a shattered bearing could have catastrophic effects.
If you have any interest in developments in technology and engineering and in how things work I highly recommend this magazine.
