									<p>Hawkins was pleased to present at the IMechE Steam Turbine and Generator User Group 2026, with technical presentations from <a href="https://www.hawkins.biz/our-experts/ben-adams/">Ben Adams</a> and <a href="https://www.hawkins.biz/our-experts/ben-lister/">Ben Lister</a> addressing key challenges in generator integrity and power system resilience.</p><p>Ben Adams, Principal Associate and Head of Power &amp; Energy, delivered a detailed technical presentation on generator <em>Stator Core Faults</em>, a persistent yet often under‑recognised risk to the reliability of large power generators. Drawing on decades of industry experience, Ben explored the mechanisms behind stator core degradation, including insulation breakdown, lamination damage, burrs and debris, and the effects of axial flux and over‑fluxing.</p><p>Using historical failures from the former Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) fleet, alongside recent case investigations, Ben demonstrated how similar failure modes continue to occur today. His presentation included examples of core‑end heating, slot‑bottom faults and burr‑related damage, reinforcing the ongoing relevance of established condition‑assessment techniques. Ben highlighted that Electromagnetic Core Imperfection Detection (ElCID) and flux testing remain essential tools for monitoring core integrity, and emphasised the importance of clean construction and rigorous maintenance practices in preventing long‑term degradation.</p>								</div>

									<p>Also presenting was Ben Lister, Electrical Engineer, who contributed to the <em>Industry Trends</em> session. Ben delivered an analysis of several high‑profile power cuts and what they reveal about modern electricity systems. His presentation explored how major outages develop, drawing on detailed technical reports and real‑world incident data.</p><p>Ben discussed the fundamentals of grid stability, including the interaction between frequency, inertia, reactive power and voltage control, before examining lessons from events such as the 2019 UK grid disturbance, the 2025 Iberian blackout, and the Heathrow Airport outage. He highlighted how system oscillations, protection behaviour, ageing assets and maintenance challenges can rapidly escalate into widespread disruption. 									<p>Hawkins is delighted to welcome back <a href="https://www.hawkins.biz/our-experts/simon-batt/">Simon Batt</a>, who returns to our Birmingham office following a brief break. Simon brings more than 15 years of experience in <a href="https://www.hawkins.biz/forensic-investigation/engineering/mechanical-engineering/">mechanical engineering</a> and <a href="https://www.hawkins.biz/forensic-investigation/power-energy/">power generation</a>, as well as a wealth of specialist knowledge spanning the automotive, aerospace, and energy sectors.</p><p>Simon is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2004 with an MEng in Mechanical Engineering. He began his career at Jaguar Land Rover, as a mechanical development engineer within the powertrain department supporting the development and testing of both petrol and diesel engine programmes.</p><p>In 2007, Simon joined Rolls‑Royce, where he pursued his interest in engineering thermodynamics as a gas turbine performance engineer. His work covered a range of naval and defence aerospace gas turbine applications, giving him deep experience in high‑performance engine systems.</p><p>Simon later moved to Siemens Energy to work on aero‑derivative <a href="https://www.hawkins.biz/forensic-investigation/power-energy/oil-and-gas/gas-turbines/">gas turbines</a> in the energy sector. He was subsequently promoted to Head of Performance, where he became a major influence in the emerging field of decarbonisation technologies. Notably, he patented an innovation related to the operation of gas turbine engines running on hydrogen, demonstrating his forward‑thinking approach to clean energy solutions.</p><p>After almost seven years in the energy sector, Simon sought a new challenge and first joined Hawkins in 2022 as a Forensic Investigator. We are delighted to welcome Simon back to the business; his extensive industry experience, technical leadership, and innovative mindset will continue to strengthen our expertise in both automotive and turbine engineering investigations.</p><p>Welcome back to Hawkins, Simon</p>								</div>

									<p>Stefano si è laureato in Ingegneria Chimica con lode all’ Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II sia alla triennale che alla magistrale. Poi ha fatto un dottorato in Ingegneria dei Prodotti e Processi Industriali presso la stessa università con una tesi in fluidodinamica computazionale (CFD). Ha ottenuto il titolo di dottore di ricerca nel 2025.</p><p>Durante il suo dottorato, Stefano ha studiato una vasta gamma di argomenti di meccanica dei fluidi (tra cui fluidi complessi, flussi multifase, combustione e deformazione di materiali sotto l’effetto di fiamme), inerenti a vari ambiti industriali. Si è occupato di modellazione, soluzione ed analisi di fenomeni complessi, sfruttando approcci differenti e investigando varie condizioni di processo, pubblicando i suoi risultati in giornali scientifici di settore.</p><p>Dopo aver completato i suoi studi, ha passato un breve periodo come ricercatore all’Università Sorbonne a Parigi, dove aveva già passato sei mesi in visita durante il suo dottorato, prima di cominciare la sua carriera da ingegnere forense.</p><p>Stefano si è unito ad Hawkins a febbraio 2026 come Associato nell’ufficio Italiano di Roma.</p>								</div>

									<p>Simon is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He received his MEng degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Birmingham in 2004. </p><p>He began his engineering career at Cosworth Racing, followed by Jaguar Land Rover working as a mechanical development engineer on petrol and diesel engine development programmes. Following this, Simon moved to Rolls-Royce where he was able to pursue his interest in engineering thermodynamics by becoming a gas turbine performance engineer. This included working on gas turbines projects for both Naval and Defence Aerospace applications.</p><p>In 2015, Simon joined Siemens Energy working on gas turbine engines within the energy sector. He was acknowledged as a ‘key expert’ in gas turbine performance and was then promoted to Head of Performance for aero-derivative gas turbines.  Simon became a key figure in the area of decarbonisation, where he was the lead inventor of a patent that was filed relating to the operation of gas turbine engines running on hydrogen.</p><p>In 2022, Simon decided to look for a new challenge and joined Hawkins as a Forensic Investigator.  He has since worked on a wide variety of fires, escapes of water and engineering investigations, including many within his particular specialisms relating to the automotive and power generation sectors.</p>								</div>

									<p>A highlight of the day was a hands-on demonstration of our <a href="https://www.hawkins.biz/news/hawkins-adds-five-top-of-the-range-hirox-microscopes-to-its-laboratories/">Hirox RX-100 digital</a> microscope, led by Materials Engineer <a href="https://www.hawkins.biz/our-experts/caroline-okeeffe/">Caroline O’Keeffe</a>. She used the microscope to examine wiring damage in detail, ultimately revealing evidence of rodent activity. Caroline explained how this high-resolution imaging technology plays a vital role in forensic investigations, enabling our experts to analyse minute surface features, tool marks, and trace evidence that are invisible to the naked eye. The demonstration highlighted the precision and depth of analysis our advanced tools provide, giving guests a real insight into the science behind our investigations.</p>								</div>

He highlighted how joint markings and other physical evidence can reveal critical insights into workmanship and the root causes of leaks. The session gave guests a first hand look at the methods and expertise used to analyse water-related incidents and prevent future failures.</p>								</div>

									<p>Fire Investigation expert <a href="https://www.hawkins.biz/our-experts/helen-rosser/">Helen Rosser</a> led a popular fire investigation exercise. Guests were presented with a realistic reconstruction of a fire-damaged socket setup and tasked with determining the cause of a simulated <a href="https://www.hawkins.biz/forensic-investigation/fire-explosions/white-goods-appliance-fires/">electrical fire</a>. By examining witness marks representing smoke and charring, and testing plug fuses, participants worked to identify which of five household appliances was responsible. The session offered an insight into how <a href="https://www.hawkins.biz/forensic-investigation/fire-explosions/">fire investigators</a> analyse physical evidence to reconstruct events and pinpoint the origin of a fire.</p>								</div>

									<p>Oscar began his career in Engineering with an apprenticeship as an Electrical Maintenance Engineer at Warburtons. His responsibilities included machine maintenance, installation, and breakdowns, covering a wide range of technologies used in an industrial bakery.</p>
<p>After completing his apprenticeship, Oscar pursued full time studies at The University of Nottingham, graduating with a First Class MEng in<a href="https://www.hawkins.biz/forensic-investigation/engineering/electrical-engineering/"> Electrical and Electronic Engineering</a>. As part of his degree, he spent his second year at Concordia University, Montreal. In his final year, Oscar focused on power electronics and control, completing a dissertation on simulating and developing control methods for HVDC voltage converters. During his time at university, Oscar joined Siemens Digital Industries (DI) through the E3 Academy scheme, working with the company during university breaks.</p>
<p>Following his degree, Oscar joined Siemens as a Graduate Engineer. As part of the graduate scheme, Oscar spent a year in Berlin on Siemens’ International Tech Talents program. His work involved training on various Siemens technologies relevant to the Digital Industries branch, such as PLCs, Variable Speed Drives (VSDs), robotics, and a 9-month project focused on developing an Automated Guided Vehicle.</p>
<p>Upon returning to the UK, Oscar worked as a Field Service Engineer within the General Motion Control department of Siemens DI. In this role, he was part of a small team covering UK wide customer sites in the commissioning, servicing, and fault finding of VSDs, ranging in size from less than 1kW, to over 1MW. Oscar has gained experience across a multitude of industries, including power stations, water treatment, recycling plants, and mining /quarry operations.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Oscar joined Hawkins in 2025, and is an Associate based in our Bristol office.</p>								</div>

									<p>Giuseppe ha conseguito una Laurea Magistrale con lode in Scienza dei Materiali e Ingegneria Nucleare presso l’Imperial College London. Durante questo periodo ha collaborato con l’Agenzia Internazionale per l’Energia Atomica (IAEA) presso il Centro Incidenti ed Emergenze, svolgendo calcoli di dose radiologica in seguito al disastro nucleare di Fukushima.</p><p>Ha poi completato un Dottorato di Ricerca in elettrochimica e corrosione, concentrandosi sui fenomeni di corrosione assistita dall’ambiente e collaborando con diverse utility nucleari a livello mondiale. Giuseppe ha inoltre trascorso un periodo in Giappone lavorando allo sviluppo dei reattori Gen III+ presso Hitachi-GE Ltd. Il suo lavoro di dottorato ha richiesto l’uso intensivo di tecniche di microscopia all’avanguardia, metodi sperimentali tradizionali, oltre a strumenti computazionali, matematici e analitici.</p><p>Dopo il PhD, Giuseppe ha lavorato come Research Associate all’Imperial College, con il supporto di EDF Energy, studiando la resistenza alla corrosione sotto sforzo delle unità di stoccaggio a secco progettate per l’immagazzinamento temporaneo del combustibile nucleare esaurito. Successivamente è stato assunto da EDF Energy come Ingegnere della Corrosione e Chimico, collaborando strettamente con le centrali elettriche prima di diventare responsabile dei sistemi di raffreddamento ad acqua e dello stoccaggio temporaneo del combustibile esaurito. Giuseppe ha definito i regimi di inibitori chimici e i sistemi di monitoraggio della corrosione per garantire la corretta gestione dei sistemi di raffreddamento. È stato responsabile di diversi progetti di ricerca e sviluppo in chimica e corrosione, in collaborazione con università, laboratori privati e nazionali, per supportare il funzionamento sicuro e continuo del parco nucleare britannico. Più recentemente, Giuseppe ha lavorato al progetto EDF Hinkley Point C come esperto tecnico, contribuendo alla definizione di un piano di gestione della corrosione.</p><p>Giuseppe è Ingegnere dei Materiali Chartered e Associato presso il nostro ufficio di Bristol.</p>								</div>
