BEng(Hons) Materials Science & Technology, University of Birmingham
MPhil Materials Engineering, University of Birmingham
Melissa has almost 20 years’ experience in materials engineering. After graduating from the University of Birmingham, she joined Federal-Mogul Technology in 1998. Here Melissa worked on various research and development projects for materials and processing of components including pistons, cylinder head gaskets, bearings, connecting rods and brake pads.
Melissa then joined Cosworth Racing in 2000, where she worked with casting, forging, heat treatment and coating suppliers to investigate and eliminate quality issues. She later became a Materials Engineer and worked on new materials, heat treatments and coatings for engine components and performed failure investigations of both engine and vehicle components.
In 2005, Melissa moved to Caterpillar as a Senior Materials Engineer in the Materials Engineering department which covered all the Caterpillar UK facilities. Here she gained experience of investigating failures of diesel engines, off-highway vehicles and factory & test cell components. She also worked with design and development engineers to promote early involvement of materials engineers in order to prevent failures later in the development cycle. Melissa was the technical lead on an Innovation UK co-funded research and development project to investigate a design methodology combining predictive modelling of casting strength and failure probability to produce castings optimised for either strength or weight.
Melissa joined Hawkins in 2017 and is currently an Associate based in our Cambridge office.
