Richard graduated from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science specialising in physical geography and environmental studies. After graduation he worked for several years in hydrology at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research. In 2008 he moved to the United Kingdom and joined Waterman Group’s transport and development division as an engineer. During this time he specialised in hydrological/hydraulic modelling, flood mitigation design, flood risk assessment and transport impact assessment, carrying out a number of projects to support Local Development Plans and planning applications.
In 2010 Richard returned to New Zealand and joined Wellington Water, a council-owned organisation responsible for managing the potable water, wastewater and stormwater services for the greater Wellington region. As an investigation and design engineer and later as senior engineer, he carried out a wide range of investigations into operational issues including flooding, water leakage and pollution incidents. He was then promoted to a new position of modelling manager where he established and led a hydraulic modelling, asset condition/deterioration modelling and geospatial analysis team, to improve the organisation’s risk management, operational investigation and strategic planning capability. During this time he also completed a postgraduate diploma in physical geography, specialising in hydrology and geospatial analysis.
In 2015 he moved back to London and joined Capita Property and Infrastructure’s Water and Environment Team as a Principal Consultant, where he delivered a number of projects for the Environment Agency, local authorities and private clients. He specialised primarily in flooding investigation, flood risk assessment and options appraisal but he also delivered projects in flood forecasting, climate change impact assessment, structural inspection / assessment of bridges, and contingency plans in the event of failure of river level management structures.
Richard joined Hawkins in July 2017 and is an Associate based in our London office.
