BSc Hons Applied Chemistry, Thames Polytechnic
Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry
Sarah started her career in forensic science in 1986 when she joined the Metropolitan Police Forensic Science Laboratory. During her time there she obtained her degree and had the opportunity to gain experience in a range of forensic disciplines. This included working as an analytical chemist to develop methods to identify trace evidence in cases of rape, as well as analysing the various types of exhibits recovered from fire scenes for the presence of ignitable liquids (or ‘accelerants’). In 1991, Sarah began to specialise in fire investigation and then worked for the Forensic Science Service (FSS) in London as a Senior Forensic Scientist.
Sarah has acted as an expert witness, primarily for the Criminal Justice System, in cases of complex, high profile and serious nature, including those involving murder, attempted murder and arson with intent to endanger life. She has also undertaken a wide range of laboratory examinations on the various types of items recovered from fire scenes, such as the examination of items recovered from fire scenes for evidence of incendiary fire setting. Sarah has given evidence as an expert witness in Crown Court and at Coroner’s Inquests on a large number of occasions, and has provided guidance to Counsel in preparation for cross-examination of the opposing expert. She has been involved in training Police officers and Fire Service personnel from the UK and abroad.
Sarah has almost 30 years’ experience in fire investigation and has attended over one thousand fire scenes. Specialising in fire investigations in domestic, commercial and industrial premises, Sarah joined Hawkins in 2012 and is currently an Associate based in our London office.
