After completing a foundation year in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Birmingham, Wayne joined Rolls-Royce Defence Aerospace in Bristol as an Advanced Technical Apprentice. During his 3 year apprenticeship, he gained formal qualifications in engineering manufacturing operations whilst working on a diverse number of Rolls-Royce projects.

Having completed his vocational qualifications and also his HNC, Wayne embarked on his first major engineering role working on the RB199 Gas Turbine used in the Panavia Tornado aircraft as a Service Engineer. Having a holistic knowledge of gas turbines but specialising in Oil Systems, Transmissions and Turbines, Wayne spent a number of years on RB199 whilst also supporting the Pegasus engine (Harrier), Gnome (Sea King), RTM322 (Apache, Merlin) and EJ200 (Eurofighter Typhoon) programmes. Wayne was fundamental in many engineering projects ranging from modification campaigns, reliability and life improvements, design changes and safety related incidents and their investigation.

In his latter years at Rolls-Royce, Wayne moved into a cost reduction/fleet management position on the EJ200 engine. A programme management position, Wayne was responsible for delivering engineering projects that would yield a substantial cost benefit to Rolls-Royce and its customers. He was also responsible for ensuring that long term fleet management requirements were met but was also involved in international win business campaigns for the engine programme. In parallel to his role, Wayne completed his Foundation Degree and BEng in Mechanical engineering and was awarded as a Whitworth Scholar by the Whitworth Society and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Part-time, Wayne is a Director of a firework display business. He is a senior firer at the company and holds a City and Guilds qualification as a Firer with the British Pyrotechnics Association.

Wayne has now found a new challenge with Hawkins where he works as a Fire and Engineering Investigator in the Bristol Office.
