A Poignant Moment for Hawkins

In 1980, Roy Hawkins rented a single starter unit on the Cambridge Science Park and RB Hawkins & Associates was founded. Roy was one of the first tenants on what was trumpeted as the first Science Park in the country. It was built on the north side of Cambridge, on a series of fields owned by Trinity College.

Unit 7, our first home, was one of the earliest parts of the Science Park and has stood resolute since 1970, while many of the early buildings were redeveloped. Throughout the 1980s and 90s, Hawkins grew steadily and took on the adjoining units. In 2000 Roy sold the Company to the management team, and soon afterwards we moved to a single, much larger building just down the road. In 2012 we made the latest move into our current home less than 100 metres from where it all started.

But Unit 7 has now come to the end of its life, and is to be demolished to make way for a smart new building. It’s a sad moment, but also an exciting one, to contemplate that from that small rented space Hawkins has grown to over 100 scientists and engineers with 8 offices around the UK and 3 others around the world. Our initial offering of only fire investigation is now completely eclipsed by the range of disciplines we offer today.
