13th April 2022
Our Marine Incidents team have created a series of webinars on how Hawkins investigates a broad range of fires, faults and failures at sea.
If the date has passed and there is a recording available, the title below will take you straight to the recording. Please feel free to register for as many topics as you like. We look forward to seeing you there.
Presented by Jessica Ng on Tuesday 19th April at 9:00AM BST
An overview of the common
causes of damage in agricultural cargoes and ways to reduce the likelihood of
occurrence.
Presented by Dr Nick Carey on Tuesday 26th April at 9:00AM BST
An overview of self-heating reactions within cargos which are transported in shipping containers and the related misdeclaration of cargo issues.
Presented by Paul Willis on Thursday 28th April at 9:00AM BST
An introduction to the common
issues associated with transporting coal in bulk, including self-heating and the
liberation of flammable methane gas. Self-heating can lead to fire, while
allowing methane to accumulate can lead to an explosive atmosphere in the hold
and adjacent spaces. Early intervention from a Hawkins expert versed in the
International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code can prevent a minor
incident from escalating.
Presented by Ed Hammersley on Tuesday 3rd May at 9:00AM BST
Further causes of fires and explosions on containerships (other than self‑heating), and how to investigate them.
Presented by Dr Sophie Parsons on Thursday 5th May at 9:00AM BST
The impact of the pandemic on the
manner in which marine experts conduct their investigations on behalf of
lawyers, P&I, insurers and various other parties. Aside from the joy of
travel logistics, tests, and last minute Covid management, this webinar will include
some tips on how best to manage casework when a great deal of the groundwork
must be done with the help of a local surveyor, when attendance is impossible.
Case examples will include the remote management of nickel ore cargo, and the
remote management of material/cargo damage on board.
➡️ THE PERENNIAL PROBLEM OF BULK CARGO LIQUEFACTION
Presented by Nico Zurcher, when he returns from an international investigation. DATE TBC
What is liquefaction? Which cargoes pose a risk when carried? And how can that risk be mitigated?
We hope you will attend, and enjoy the presentations.
