Dr Nick Carey, of the Reigate Office, and Nico Zurcher, of the London Office, recently attended The International Cargo Insurance Conference (ICIC) 2019 in June at the Devere Latimer Estate Hotel in Buckinghamshire. Hawkins was one of the event sponsors of the conference, which was attended by 220 delegates from 20 countries.
ICIC 2019 included many technical presentations and panel discussions about a number of cargo‑related topics. These included the issues of container ship and Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) ship fires, which Hawkins has frequently investigated. The presentations also covered the recent increase in the numbers of fires on such vessels.
One presentation detailed the proposed movement of a very large glacier, which historically entered the sea near Antarctica, all the way to South Africa, in order to assist with the recent water shortages in Cape Town. This highlighted the variety of topics covered at the conference this year.
Hawkins are keen to engage with the delegates of ICIC again, and would like to run a practical workshop at the planned ICIC in 2020.
