Hawkins Civil Engineering team expands

Our Civil Engineering department expands as we welcome three new experts; Paul Hughes, Bernard Travers, and Jon Watkins.

Paul Hughes joins our London office. Paul left Newcastle University in 2007 with a Masters Degree in Civil and Structural Engineering. As part of his course of study he spent a year at the National University of Singapore on a graduate exchange programme. He joined Royal Haskoning, Maritime Division, working from the design office on a wide variety of projects including ports, shipyards, dry docks, terminals and other maritime structures. During this time he was also seconded to BAM Nuttall, working on the London Olympic site overseeing the construction of bridges and retaining walls.

In 2011, Paul joined 2H Offshore and over the next five years worked from London, Paris, Dubai and Kuala Lumpur on the design and management of specialist offshore projects. He expanded his engineering knowledge into subsea systems, specialising in the design, structural analysis and integrity management of riser and conductor systems. This included the design and construction of minimal facilities platforms and subsea structures for hybrid risers.

Also joining our London office, Bernard Travers graduated from Cambridge University in 2010 with a degree in Engineering, specialising in Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering. During his time at Cambridge he was sponsored by Skanska UK, gaining experience on both highways and rail sites.

During his time at Arup, Bernard provided technical advice for old and new structures in masonry, timber, concrete and steel under a variety of situations including new build, refurbishment and repair. He carried out structural assessments and designed modifications of existing structures ranging from Victorian railway buildings to garment factories in Bangladesh following the Rana Plaza disaster, advising in particular on testing and investigations to poor quality concrete. He also worked on a number of projects where structural vibration was a critical issue, including low-vibration laboratory design and assessment, analysis of vibrating industrial structures and equipment and the design of vibration-isolated rail.

Jon Watkins, who is based at our office in Glasgow, graduated from Imperial College London in 2010 with a first class degree in Civil Engineering. He was sponsored by Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd through the Quest Scholarship programme with the Institution of Civil Engineers. During university he gained over six months’ worth of site experience on three different projects. On graduation he joined Sir Robert McAlpine as a site engineer supervising the construction of a Wind Turbine R&D facility on the Isle of Wight.

Jon joined Atkins in 2010 working as a structural design engineer in many different sectors including rail, waste management, airports and residential. He has particular experience in assessment of existing structures for refurbishment projects. In addition to this Jon has performed seismic surveys for residential buildings in high risk zones across the Middle-East. He was seconded to Atkins Qatar as part of the Doha Metro project for over a year providing client support to a remote design team.
