Recently, Jo Fanthorpe of Hawkins' finance department, took part in The Woodward Family charity walk fundraiser. The walk was organised to raise money for Dementia UK in memory of Jo’s friend’s mother, who passed away earlier this year after battling with the illness for 5 years. Jo says, “I have also lost a few close people to this horrible disease so it is a cause close to my heart.”
In Jo’s team, there were 23 adults, 5 children and 5 dogs. Jo reports that this was not your ‘run-of-the-mill’ walk with some road, meadow and footpath walking, alongside trekking through some very overgrown woods.
Jo commented that there were, “nettles and thistles almost as tall as me, fallen trees which we had to either climb over or limbo under and brambles which attacked our skin and clothes. We walked through a field of cows, saw sheep, pigs and ducks, climbed over stiles and even had to duck under a bridge for about 20 or so steps!” One member of her group had to negotiate all of this with a wheelbarrow, as he pushed a young child in it, who wanted to participate but would not have been able to withstand the duration and intensity of the walk.
Jo said that it was a really challenging but fun day, and that the weather also helped a lot. Hawkins contributed to the £1,500 that Jo’s walking team has raised so far, but Jo is pleased to say that donations are still coming in.
