Hong Kong Maritime Week

In November, our team in Hong Kong participated in a number of events as part of the Hong Kong Maritime Week.

The 5th Asia Marine Insurance Conference, held on the 20th and 21st of November, had some 170 insurers, shipowners, and risk experts exchanging ideas on cyber coverage, the Belt and Road Initiative and the changing role of marine insurers. Hawkins' Dr John Allum participated in a panel event on Salvage and Wreck Removal, providing expertise on the management of dangerous cargoes, whilst Dr Sophie Parsons gave a presentation on “Tweeters vs Neo Luddites - A Material Girl’s Perspective”, which focused on the use of technology in accident investigation. Hawkins had a stand at the event and clients appeared very happy to see us supporting the event in Hong Kong.

Later that week Hawkins Hong Kong joined forces with the Women's International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA) to co-sponsor an evening cocktail event with a panel discussion on best practice in casualty management. The audience was a mixture of insurers, lawyers and maritime industry people. The panellists shared their insight on how best to navigate a casualty from incident, to claim management, expert involvement, and then to court. For Hawkins, Dr Sophie Parsons highlighted the problems that can be encountered from an expert's view following severe damage to a vessel. Following the event there were cocktails sponsored by Hawkins and the evening was very well received.
