WISTA Hong Kong’s First Conference

The Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA International) held their first ever conference this June. The events included a poolside cocktail reception, hosted jointly with the Nautical Institute Hong Kong, on Thursday 13th June; an all-day conference at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club on Friday 14th June; and a junk boat trip with a seafood lunch to close the events on Saturday 15th June. The theme for WISTA’s inaugural conference was: “Changing tides and shifting Sands.”

Hawkins Managing Director, Dr Andrew Moncrieff, travelled from the Cambridge Office to attend alongside investigators Jessica Ng, Dr Sophie Parsons and Dr John Allum from Hawkins’ Hong Kong Office. Dr Parsons has also been acting as WISTA Secretary to organise and participate in local Asian maritime events.

The conference began with three panel discussions and ended with an interactive workshop. The second panel discussion, as well as a large portion of the conference’s focus as a whole, was devoted to discussing Diversity and Inclusion.

#IamOnBoard With Gender Diversity

Conference Delegates can be seen here sharing the supportive (and nautically appropriate) hashtag campaign: #IamOnBoard With Gender Equality

The interactive session was led by an Executive Communications Coach, who taught both male and female delegates how to present themselves professionally and confidently in public, as well as how to communicate appropriately with clients, and the importance of first impressions.

WISTA Organising Committee

Pictured above is the WISTA Organising Committee, made up of: Pansy Tsang (of Hill Dickinson Law), Preetika Mehrotra (of Stanton Chase Recruitment), Elizabeth Sloane (of Stephenson Harwood),
Dr Sophie Parsons (WISTA Secretary, of Hawkins), Rachel Wong (of Skuld P&I), and WISTA President Catherine Smith (of Wah Kwong ShipOwners).

There were approximately 80-90 delegates in attendance, and WISTA is pleased with the turnout and success of their first Asia Pacific regional event. Some delegates even traveled from WISTA India and WISTA Singapore. Hawkins looks forward to attending more WISTA events in the future.
