In the event of unexpected situations on a superyacht, it is essential to act promptly and effectively to ensure the safety of everyone on board and to minimise any damage to the vessel. Fire Investigation Expert, Dr Andrew Moncrieff, participated in an expert-led panel discussion hosted by Young Professionals in Yachting (YPY) UK as they reviewed major casualty responses and the best practices in the superyacht industry following an incident.
The panel explored real-world incidents, crisis management, and best practices when an accident occurs, with Andrew describing the most effective response to a fire on board these vessels. Andrew also included a review of the role of a forensic fire investigator when conducting investigations into onboard fires commenting on what is important, how to establish the root cause of the incident, and the suitability and recoverability of evidence. Andrew also discussed the most common causes of fires, what can be done to mitigate the risks, and reviewed the current training and procedures.
Dr Andrew Moncrieff joined Hawkins in 1992 where he trained in the investigation of fires and explosions, a discipline in which he has worked ever since. He regularly presents for clients and at external events sharing his expertise in both fire and geological investigations. Andrew recently delivered a presentation on The Myth of Spontaneous Human Combustion & and the Science of Self-Heating where he explored the reasons why a human body might suddenly burst into flames with no outside influences. Andrew also is an expert in forensic geology and carries out related investigations into the deterioration of natural building materials, failures in quarries and mines, fraud and serious, high-profile crimes.
