As roads age and traffic volumes increase, concerns are increasingly raised regarding the relationship between defective road surfaces, ground-borne vibration and alleged building damage. Potholes and deteriorated carriageways can generate significant dynamic loads when struck by passing vehicles, but determining whether those vibrations are capable of causing structural damage is often far from straightforward.
This webinar explores the mechanisms by which vehicle impacts generate vibration and how those vibrations travel through the ground to nearby structures. Particular attention will be given to Peak Particle Velocity (PPV), the principal metric used to assess vibration effects on buildings and structures.
The session will examine how factors such as vehicle type, speed, road condition, foundation design and ground conditions can influence vibration levels, together with the role of monitoring and measurement in investigating complaints and claims.
