Despite improvements in overall shipping safety, fires on ships remain a significant concern. Fires on large vessels, especially container ships and car carriers, are a particular concern due to the potential for rapid spread and high salvage costs.
Hawkins fire investigation expert Nick Carey , recently presented at the Maritime Fire Safety Conference where he delivered a talk on the challenges of tackling fires aboard containerships.
Nick’s presentation, titled “Self-Heating Fires on Containerships – The Difficulties of Fighting Fires While at Sea”, explored a complex case study involving three separate container fires on a single vessel. Drawing on his extensive experience, Nick discussed the practical difficulties of managing such incidents at sea or while at anchor. He highlighted misdeclared cargo as a major contributor and explained recent amendments to the IMDG Code and advances in fire detection and firefighting equipment.
Nick has been with Hawkins since 2012, following a 27-year career with the London Fire Brigade, including 16 years as a full-time Fire Investigation Officer. He is a Certified Fire Investigator, a Chartered Forensic Practitioner, and holds a PhD from the University of Strathclyde for his research into fire and electrical interactions. He has conducted numerous investigations across the UK and internationally, including shipping and superyacht casualties.
