Lucy presents at CILA

As lithium-ion batteries become increasingly embedded in everyday life, the risks associated with their failure continue to grow. Hawkins’ fire and explosions expert Lucy Pinkard delivered her presentation Lithium-ion Batteries: A Forensic Insight, at this year’s Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters (CILA) Conference. Themed The Way Ahead, the conference focused on the most urgent and impactful issues facing the profession today.

Drawing on her extensive background in forensic science, fire investigation, and explosives analysis, Lucy explored one of the most pressing fire risks in modern claims: lithium-ion battery failures. Her presentation covered:

Lucy served as a Crime Scene Manager and Forensic Fire Investigator with Avon and Somerset Constabulary contributing to high-profile investigations involving arson and murder. She holds a Master’s degree in Forensic Investigation of Explosives and Explosions from Cranfield University, where she also lectures in fire investigation. Her thesis focused specifically on thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries, making her uniquely qualified to address this growing risk.

Lucy was joined by Hawkins experts Graeme Drysdale (left) and Dr Andrew Moncrieff (Right).
