Materials Series – Failures Encountered in Aeroderivative Gas Turbines

Stephen gives insight into what an aero-derivative is, as well as their benefits and disadvantages. He also discusses RCA methodology
and damage mechanisms encountered.
Do You Need to High Speed Test Generator Rotors?

The subject of high-speed balancing generator rotors can be contentious, and the practice varies across the world. In Europe, with relatively easy access to high-speed test facilities, the default position is generally to carry out the testing. However, in Southeast Asia, Africa and South America, where there are fewer (if any) facilities, a risk-based approach is taken more often; this approach does not include high-speed testing
Minimising The Cost of Gas Turbine Failure Through Performance Monitoring and Early Issue Detection

The following two cases highlight emerging issues with gas turbines engines and the benefits that could have been achieved through prompt maintenance and resolution.

John Holland

An Intel scholar, John graduated with a 1st Class Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering from University College Dublin, Ireland in 2000. As part of his degree he developed an automatic moisture sensor for use in the peat industry for which he was awarded the Hewlett Packard national award for innovation in engineering. After a brief period with Schlumberger Oilfield Services in Peru, John returned to Ireland to take up a position with Teradyne Connection Systems, before joining Timoney Technology as a mechanical design engineer, where he specialised in the design and development of Hydropneumatic Suspension Systems for specialty off road vehicles. In this role he also gained considerable experience with computer aided engineering techniques such as Finite Element Analysis and Vehicle Multi-body Dynamic Analysis. John was appointed engineering manager with Timoney Technology and took over full technical responsibility for all engineering projects and products. Projects of note include the DARPA Unmanned Ground Combat Vehicle, the USMC Gladiator Tactical Unmanned Vehicle and the Timoney ADT Independent Suspension Axle System manufactured under licence by Terex Equipment Ltd. John was also involved with the Ginaf Rally Power and DeRooy race teams for the 2007 Dakar Rally and has numerous automotive suspension patents filed […]
International Series – Escape of Water: Really a Materials Problem?

This webinar will look at how the fault is often placed on a defective component when an escape of water occurs, and how Hawkins investigates other potential causes to identify the real issue.
Hawkins Webinars: The International Series

For our second series of webinars in 2023, our Dubai, Hong Kong and Singapore offices have teamed up to create a series covering some of Hawkins’ expertise in the built environment, and marine sectors as well as topics involving fires and escapes of water. Read a summary of each webinar and register below. CLICK HERE TO REGISTER Moisture Issues in Buildings Presented by Austen Smith Thursday 6th April 2023 at 9.00am BST Austen will cover the issues and impact during construction and post-occupancy, and how moisture in building materials and the local environment can impact the fabric of buildings in hot climates. Escape of Water: Really a Materials Problem? Presented by Chun Chan Thursday 20th April 2023 at 9.00am BST Chun will discuss how the fault is often placed on a defective component when an escape of water occurs, and how Hawkins investigates other potential causes to identify the real issue. The Perennial Problem of Bulk Cargo Liquefaction Presented by Nico Zurcher Thursday 4th May 2023 at 9.00am BST Nico’s presentation will answer the following questions: What is liquefaction? Which cargoes pose a risk when carried? How can that risk be mitigated? Should a Building be Demolished Following a […]
