Hawkins Consultant, Gary Hotchkiss and his wife Jane recently completed a two-day marathon from Glasgow to Edinburgh. The challenge was a heartfelt tribute to Jane’s mother, Cath, and aimed to raise funds for Hospice at Home, a charity that provided valuable end of life care and support to Cath and her family.

The couple chose the route for its personal significance; each city is home to one of their sons and held special meaning for Jane’s parents. By splitting the journey over two days and staying overnight halfway, they tackled just over a marathon each day, a feat neither had attempted before.
Their scenic route followed the Forth & Clyde Canal to the Falkirk Wheel, then continued along the Union Canal to Edinburgh. Along the way, they passed tunnels, aqueducts, sculptures, Roman forts, and remnants of Scotland’s historic shale oil industry. The first day brought hot, sunny weather, while the second offered cooler conditions, until the Scottish skies opened up just as they reached the finish line. The final challenge was climbing the four flights of stairs leading to their son’s flat.
Despite the physical demands, Gary and Jane found the experience deeply rewarding.
“It was a wonderful way to remember Cath” Gary said. “We had many kind and generous donations from friends, family and colleagues, which will help Hospice at Home continue to provide end-of-life support for others.”
Their inspiring journey not only honoured a loved one, but also sparked a new passion. The couple is already considering future multi-day running challenges.
