Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS): How Do They Respond in a Collision?

Advanced driver assistance systems refer to technologies designed to assist drivers in safely operating a vehicle.  Given that most road accidents result from human error, ADAS aim to automate, adapt, and enhance vehicle technology for improved safety and driving experience.

Early ADAS features include electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, blind spot information systems, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and traction control.  As ADAS continues to evolve, incorporating automated technologies like sensors and cameras, it can now facilitate various levels of autonomous driving.

Mechanical Engineer, Robert Taylor provides an overview of the different types of ADAS and how each may respond in the event of a collision. He takes time to answer questions such as  “What does the data tell us?” and “What can be determined from published literature and test results?”
